Space Traveler Shares Depression After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the flight.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
