At least 13 individuals perish and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
